Does anyone have experience developing widgets for iOS? My app is developed using Air and Starling which is great, but a lot of my users are requesting a widget to go with the app. Where do I even start? I only have experience with as3 and IntelliJ IDEA. Do I have to use xCode and learn swift? Basically, what are my options and where do I start?

You need a Swift learning and use Xcode, a Widget Extension on iOS is an *.appex directory, see this turorial, it's the same behavior :
iOS App Extensions (plugins) for AIR apps.
You need too to use "App Groups" to communicate with the widget but is broken since AIR SDK 50.2.4.2 (failing to be signed correctly), I reported it to Harman here, will be fixed in the next release.
