It’s obvious from the underwhelming participation that the new petition is going nowhere. But even if it had hundreds of thousands of signatories it would make no difference. Adobe no longer own AIR, they have sold it. It is now a commercial product, and whatever deal Harman and Adobe signed it was surely based on AIR not becoming open source.
The other reason it makes no sense is for open source you need more than just a handful of people who want it. You need a significant number of committed and expert people willing to contribute. I don’t know if there was ever enough people in the AIR community for that. There certainly isn’t now.
And Adobe have a particular reason to keep it closed source, for another 12 months; they will be responsible for security updates, and they need to keep it closed source for security. After 2020 only the commercial version from Harman will be available.
