Hey guys! This isn't really a new release, but I figured I'd showcase my biggest pride and joy of a game since I've never posted it on here. It's called Helmet Heroes. I originally released the game back in early 2013 after hoping for a new and better revenue stream than the old flash game sponsorship that was dying. I originally designed it with nothing but the flash display list. Up until early this year, I worked on the game full time, adding more and more content, fixing bugs, etc. Around 2015 I started to change 90% of the whole game over to Starling! This took probably around 8 months, quite a bit of work! But the performance gain was definitely awesome after having been used to the flash display list for years.
I started working on the game in December 2012, it was my first every multiplayer game. I released it in very early beta in March 2013 with minimal content, but still playable nonetheless. The game has undergone insane amounts of revamping/redoing things, adding more and more areas, equipment, fixes, monsters, performance gains, etc since then. It was a never ending cycle. I've managed to get the game on the front page of Newgrounds, Kongregate, Armor Games, MiniJuegos, and various other pretty big named flash game sites. The game still remains on the front page of Newgrounds today. All of these big sites tremendously helped boost the games player base.
End of 2016 was a big year, as I got the game on Steam, Android, and IOS! So being able to finally play the same exact game, but on mobile was so cool! Something players had always wanted.
I've slowed most of my work on the game earlier this year as I was getting a bit burned out from it and wanted to work on something else. I was going to wait to post the game on here until I added some amazing dynamic lighting to the game using the Starling 2.0 dynamic lighting stuff, but I think I may save the dynamic lighting for a new game in the near future since I've started to shift away from Helmet Heroes a little bit.
While it's certainly no League of Legends or Runescape, it's done pretty well. I've had over 8 million registered accounts, and I currently have around 155,000 active users a month and around 5,500,000 "plays" a month.
So if anybody ever says you can't make and run an MMO all by yourself, I'll tell you that you can. 😉
