I was wondering if anybody here has already experienced problems attempting to translate their games/apps to Chinese and Japanese. It's personally the first time I have to do this myself and it's driving me crazy.
I've been using bitmap fonts for all my projects so far, but this time I had to embed a font that contains all the glyphs that Japanese and Chinese languages require (> 20K glyphs). Therefore, the .otf file size that I'm embedding is almost 17MB!
I have no problem on embedding that on the mobile version (the game size already is huge, so 17 more MB is not that bad). The problem is when we talk about the browser version of the game (it's also on Facebook and Kongregate), we honestly wouldn't like to let the player download ~18MB of preloader.
We have already tried generating bitmap fonts for the 24k glyphs, but it's insane the amount of texture atlases that we need for that so, that's not an option either.
Finally, I've been looking for a lighter font on the internet for the last two days and, definately there are some fonts that support Chinese, or Japanese, but there's no font that contains ALL the glyphs that both languages require and we do need to be able to have all of them since there's an in-game chat and some players may need them at some point. So we ended up using a Google Noto Font (Noto Sans CJK JP) which can be found here (https://www.google.com/get/noto/), which is the only one that contains all the available glyphs.
So my question is, what would you recommend us to do? Is there any way of downloading on demand a font like, only downloading it after checking the users locale or when the player attempts to switch language to one of those?
I'd really appreciate some hints about this!
